Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life Community-Based Lung Cancer Screening Program

Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life Community-Based Lung Cancer Screening Program

The Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life Lung Cancer Screening Program was launched by Keck Medicine of USC, USC Civic Engagement, and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in partnership with Watts Healthcare Corporation which included community members to encourage screening among those at high risk in South and other areas of Los Angeles.

A Community Advisory Board was established at the start of the program to provide input on program development, outreach to community members, educational approaches and materials, follow up from screening, patient navigation, annual rescreening, referrals to smoking cessation services and cultural competency.

This program has successfully screened over 300 community members at risk for lung cancer and navigated over 60 patients for successful follow up. We have also referred over 60 smokers to quitlines and classes. We plan to continue building partnerships and an advocacy initiative around our lung cancer screening efforts in underserved communities of Los Angeles.
